Dr. Susanne Homant is President and CEO of The Able Trust, a statewide foundation dedicated to creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities.  The Trust, created in 1990 by the state legislature, has provided grants totaling more than $25 million since its inception, grants which have served all 67 counties in Florida.  Grant projects of the Trust serve people of all ages and all disabilities.  The Able Trust is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors, all appointed by the Governor.

Sue has been with The Able Trust since 2007, and is responsible for the operations of the organization.  Her previous experience includes executive management work with the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Florida, the Florida Hospices and Palliative Care Organization, the Michigan Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, the Health Care Association of Michigan, and the Michigan Health and Hospital Association.  She has over 20 years of experience with statewide organizations dealing with health care, public policy, advocacy, fundraising, and public awareness and education.  She earned her MBA degree from Northern Michigan University, and her Doctorate in Public Administration at Western Michigan University.  She is published and has presented at several state and national meetings.  She currently serves on the Governor’s Autism Task Force and the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities.

Sue was raised in a home that included two people with disabilities – a brother with polio and a father with muscular atrophy.  She has a nephew who was born deaf, and a close relative with a mental illness.  All of these individuals led/are leading very successful lives, providing Sue with the unique experience of personally seeing how abilities overcome disabilities.

Dr. Homant and her husband Joe have five children and 11 grandchildren.  They moved to Florida from Michigan in 2001, fulfilling one of Joe’s dreams – to retire in Florida.  They are avid golfers, enjoy the outdoors and love the sunny South.
